January Week 1 Quilting

I started the year off with a bang. 4 of my own UFOs have been quilted, have binding sewn on by machine and are awaiting hand sewing. One is in progress while we watch Frontier on Netflix.

Mary'l Love and Roses panel quilt with Hearts and Roses quilting.

 This is Marietta's Double Wedding Ring quilt. It has been waiting months to be done. I was feeling very intimidated by it but I told her it would be done in 2018. I was 2 days late, but I love it and I think it was worth the wait.

New granddaughter, Gracie's pink foxy quilt.

Gracie made this beautiful cancer ribbon quilt and I quilted it with Cancer Awareness Ribbon panto.

This is a tshirt quilt made by April with Turbulence quilting.

UFO Finish

We had to have our furnace replaced this week and had ductwork added and central air. We are so pleased with the finished product. Talking with the installer we discovered he is raising a 9-month old baby boy on his own. I said to him, "I make quilts!. It's what I do!" So, I went in search of a UFO for a little boy.

I found this top from a guild hexagon swap in 2012. There were 10 of us and we each cut 10 hexagons of 10 different fabrics. So, we each ended up with the same hexagons and we could put them together as we wanted. This has been a top for a long time.

 

I quilted it with Becker's Shooting Stars and applied machine binding. Told him that it's an I-Spy quilt and he can play games with his little boy when he's a little older

It's good to have this one finished and off the UFO list.

Happy New Year

Let's see if I can get back into the blogging world.

This has been a busy holiday season, lots of family fun, but I'm ready to get back to a quiet house and lots of quality time with Mabel. Dan goes back to work on Tuesday, so Wednesday I'll get back in the groove. Not for long though, I may have jury duty on Thursday and Friday I'm going to a short quilt retreat in Perrysville, IN with my Spring Break committee. We'll do some planning for the retreat in March and get some sewing done too.

One of the Facebook groups I belong to is having a UFO challenge in January.  We are to work on our oldest one. This one is pretty old....started in 2009.

 Then it got put away for over 2 years. I finally took it to a retreat to do something with it.

Yesterday, I chose a backing and today I quilted it with Becker's Shooting Star. One of the local groups I quilt with are collecting 53+ quilts for children in a particular school corporation who are homeless. This is my 5th quilt for this drive.

 

I hope to get the binding finished before Tuesday.

 



Getting It Done!

Judy L's UFO challenge this year has a new name. My January Getting It Done list is below. It's going to be a busy year for me with our guild's UFO list, my Short List, and now the Getting It Done List. That's a good thing though, as I have so many unfinished projects. I would guess that if I finished all of them, I wouldn't have to buy Christmas presents this year, as everyone could receive a quilt. Hmmm, now that's a thought, although I love to shop!

Design Wall Monday

These blocks are my #6 UFO and I intend to finish this one this month. They are from a workshop by Kay Capps Cross.

Ahh, I remember the workshop well..........She caught me using my rotary cutter to cut strips instead of tearing them, and she took it away.

Not long after that, she caught me using pins to pin the three layers together and ..........yep, she took them away also.

I did have 5 blocks finished after the workshop, but them they got put away. the pattern calls for a thin strip of black/white fabric as sashing, but I'm thinking I might add alternating red/lime green borders to the blocks.

Another UFO Finished

I put the last stitches in the binding of this one last night. These nine-patch blocks were in the guild charity quilt bins when I had custody of them. They were put together with some fabrics for the borders and backing. In the couple of years since they were stashed away, I decided not to use them as planned and put this top together at out charity sewing day earlier this month. I quilted it using the Circle Lord Clam template, QD poly batting and light chambray Perma Core thread.

I just love to stitch on binding while I'm watching the Olympics in the evenings! I'm really going to miss it when they are over.

UFOs - Bow Ties and Leftover Colorful Blocks

I did work on these two UFO this week. The bow tie blocks were sent to me by the president of the Blue Star Mothers Indianapolis group. She knows that I'm a quilter and picked them up at a yard sale and mailed the to me. I have them listed as a UFO and didn't know what to do with them. They were hand pieced and not at all the same size. I squared them up, and yes, cut off some of the points! I'm not sure if I will add a border or not.........



Any ideas on when these might have been pieced?



These blocks are left over from an online swap. I added borders to the blocks and striped sashing. I will add an outer border with the black print and this one will be a charity quilt.

Bibs, Mystery Quilt and UFO's

Last night Dan fixed a wonderful dinner of grilled/smoked chicken, Amish noodles from Shipshewana and steamed broccoli from our garden last year. So, I got to get a lot of sewing done. I'm so lucky he like to cook!!

I quilted this UFO for a while. Then the phone rang and I can't quilt with the phone on my shoulder, but I can sit at my sewing machine, so......



Then I went to my sewing room and made these bibs for Andrew. They are made with tea towels and ribbing. It probably only took me 20 minutes to make both of them. I have 2 more, but want to make sure they go over his head before I make more. There sure isn't a wide variety of tea towels with cute designs that are reasonably priced. I got the one on the left at K-mart for $3 and the other one came in a package of 3 for $6.99 at Target. My fabric purchase so far this week is the ribbing, which I got a Joanns. It's $6.99/yard regular price, but 40% off right now and a quarter yard will do 10 bibs. Of course, I wanted more than one color, so I got 4 colors. I'll be adding that yard to my stashbusting report this week. Maybe I'll buy some more towels and sell some on etsy.



I also want to embroider a 1st birthday design on one for him to wear on Sunday.




Then I made these 12 blocks that are part of a guild mystery quilt that I'm way behind on. I cut the fabric for it when I was putting away leftover project stuff and the background fabric is from a Pooh quilt that I did, and I knew that If I put it back into a drawer, it wouldn't get used. So, I'll have a cute quilt ready for the next baby girl.

Hidden Wells UFO

I finally added borders to my Hidden Wells quilt this week. I loaded and quilted it Friday evening, using the Rose Vine panto again. I used a poly batting on a small roll from Joanns that was cheap. It feels pretty stiff, but I hope it will soften up when washed. The first side of the binding is sewn down by machine and one side of the hand sewing is done. This UFO from 2001 is on one of my UFO Elimination lists for this month, so I'm going to finish it up in the next few days. The instructions for this one are here. I made my first one of these when I had just started quilting and didn't know to be afraid of bias edges.

Stash Busting Report

I can't believe how well I am doing this year, so far, with finishing UFOs and using stash. I haven't bought any fabric this year.
