Graduation Cakes

Before I started quilting, I was a cake baker/decorator for 20+ years. I taught Wilton Cake Decorating at Hobby Lobby and was the Cake Decorating Superintendent for 4-H for a short time. I quit baking cakes about 4 years ago and have only made several cakes for family since then.

I thought it might be fun to take some photos of the whole process last night while making the graduation cakes for Tony's party on Saturday. I know you might be thinking that I am baking them pretty early for Saturday, but I always put them in the freezer, even if I was going to decorate it the same day. It makes them much easier to spread the icing on if they have been frozen.

Here's the whole process:

Awesome...I'll be doing the same thing for the next few weekends. Might I ask if your Ruthie from the old AlexAnderson Quilts message board?

I am amazed at all of your talents! I never knew how bakers made their cakes look so good. I just called Ruthie to ask her some questions about cake baking. You can even make layered dessets with the caake leftovers. How cool is that!

She is putting some more pictures on her blog. They are of the "Auction Quilt". Can't waait to see them.
